What did the PTA do in the past few weeks?
Harrington’s Big Book Swap was a success!

On February 27th Harrington students participated the Big Book Swap, an initiative organized by the Harrington PTA to promote literacy and the joy of reading. Students were encouraged to bring books they had finished reading and exchange them for others they hadn’t yet discovered. Thanks to the generosity of our Harrington families and staff, we collected around 1,500 books, allowing each student to take home 3-4 books!  Many students and staff dressed up as their favorite book characters—with prizes for Favorite Costume. Students also had a chance to participate in a “Name the Character” raffle, with winners and prizes handed out at the All Hawks Meeting. Thank you again to the Harrington Community for making the Book Swap a big success!

The Harrington PTA monthly meeting

Held on Tuesday, March 5, commenced with brief opening remarks, followed by a quick update on the March 15th Science Fair by Riddhi Shah. The Booster Team then engaged parents for 20 minutes on current initiatives, leading into the main agenda item: a 60-minute Literacy Chat for families interested in enhancing their children's reading skills, featuring insights from our specialists. The meeting also touched upon upcoming events including the Patriots Day Parade, Kindness Rocks, the Talent Show, and HarryPalooza, while reflecting on the successes of recent activities like the January Movie Night and the February Book Swap.

Public Hearings for the 2024-2025 LPS Calendar

PTO/A presidents,

At Tuesday’s March 12th School Committee meeting, the Calendar Working Group will be presenting recommendations for the 2024-2025 LPS calendar. The presentation is linked on the agenda. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ajpWJCf_ZGA0xfPGIxOd6V8mke4sHmGNYujvPvLO3Ps/edit

The working group was formed by the School Committee in response to requests from parents and students to create a school calendar aligned with LPS values. The working group met for many months to examine the issue and make recommendations to the School Committee. The presentation contains a lot of information about our process and all of the calendar options we considered. Please take a look at the presentation and be sure to click on all the embedded links. It would be enormously helpful if you can share it with your boards and parents.

As it’s already March, we have tight timeline in which to approve the calendar. We have scheduled two public hearings to get feedback. The first is March 18th, 5:30-6:45 pm. The second is March 20th, 8am. Both hearings will be remote. And of course parents can always share their thoughts with the School Committee by emailing us at school-com@lexingtonma.org

Thanks,

Kathleen Lenihan, School Committee
